moving into virginia and north carolina. we have torrential downfalls right now. you see new york city is at 33 degrees. that's going to be an area where we will see that snow start off as rain and then it changes in the back side of the storm. so most of today, it's okay in new york city but then it turns into tonight. we do are blizzard warnings in the bright pink here. that's an area where we could end up with two feet of snow. there's only really been four snowstorms with two feet of snow in boston. this could be the fifth one and a crippling storm. >> living up to the label historic. >> absolutely. >>> turning now to california where a massive manhunt has the los angeles area on virtual lockdown. the lapd even putting extra security at their headquarters because the spblgt used to be one of their own. christopher dorner is wanted in multiple shootings spanning six days. the 33-year-old said he's declaring war with the lapd after losing his job. according to his late and rambling manifesto, he wants to revenge until his name is clear. he writes the violence of action will be high.

on nbc bay area, the amazing story of survival. this morning we talked to the 81-year-old redwood city grandmother who survived a home invasion robbery. she was home alone yesterday afternoon when masked men came in through the back door. it happened on 10th avenue across from taft tell metropolit elementary. she thought this was a joke. she stood at gunpoint while the man ransacked the house. >> i was praying that my son would not come in because they told me if someone would come in, they would shoot him. once you have them actually putting a gun on someone, that's basically defenseless. she uses a cane. how could you do that? there are people out there that have no feelings. >> the two men level her alone in a room but were in her home for another hour. she finally hid in the closet, called her daughter who called police. redwood city police locked down the school across the street and managed to catch one of the suspect. they are looking for the gunman and the woman that acted as a lookout. >>> looking for thieves that tied up a janitor and made off with 40 ipads. the suspects tell

on the roads is going to be just treacherous from areas like new york city up through hartford through providence, rhode island and over into boston too and moving into central and northern new england. it's coming in pieces. we have a lot of moisture network with and a lot of cold air moving in as well. blizzard warnings are posted all along the coast of new england with eastern massachusetts likely the area that will get hit the hardest with power outages, a lot of wind damage, wind gusts could be as high as about 60 to 65 miles per hour. you can see boston could end up with more than two feet of snow. new york city should be closer to six to ten inches and hartford 12 to 18. that's the east. out west we have some weather of your own from san francisco down into l.a. we have a lot of showers out that way and those will continue to affect the coast of l.a. temperatures will only be in the 40s and 50s on the elko, nevada could end up with a wintry mix. snow in the northeast and rain in california. it should wind down tomorrow. >> i would take the rain if i had a choice. >> so i would.

is the rain. new york city, a mixture of snow and rain. long island, now over to mostly rain. coastal areas of southern new england, it's going to be a battle. that's why your snow totals will be a lot less. the full-blown snowstorm begins from boston to the hartford area and definitely around prove d providence. that's when the storm will be the strongest. that's when we'll have the blizzard conditions, high tide cycle. very dangerous at 10:00 a.m. near boston. that's when the highest winds will be felt. storm surge of two to four feet. if we're going to see houses damaged and falling into the water, we go early throughout tomorrow morning. again, the snowfall totals, they look pretty certain. one to two feet, a wide section of maine, southern new hampshire, massachusetts, connecticut, rhode island with a possibility of a bulls eye of 24 to possibly 30 inches of snow. that's where it's historic. still, widespread all the way from buffalo down to philadelphia and new york city by the time we're all done. as far as the boston area goes, that's where we expect the worst to develop during the

, even new york city now with blizzard warnings, expecting 12 to 18 inches there. this is going to be a blockbuster storm. the big question is can we get everybody off the roads in time? that's what the desire is hout . the government says, look, i want all unnecessary vehicles off the road by noon tomorrow. so if we have a scene like you see behind me here, larry, where i-93 is backlogged at this time tomorrow night, we're going to have a disaster on our hands. that means some of these people are going to be spend being the night in their cars riding out the storm. 35 years ago the famous blizzard of '78 it was rush hour and people got trapped in their cars. if they are in their cars this time, the same thing will happen. history will repeat itself. we will also have hurricane force gusts along the coastline. some of these areas that were weakened by sandy will be very, very vulnerable certainly to the storm surge and the wave action that will happen with this huge nor'easter. we expect to measure this one with a yard stick, larry, two to three feet expected here in boston. >>
